Government Grants for Home Improvements in the UK

If you’re looking to make your home warmer, greener, and more affordable to run, a range of government grants could help cover the cost of vital improvements provided you meet the eligibility criteria.

These funding schemes are designed to help UK households improve energy efficiency, cut down on energy bills, and reduce their carbon footprint. Depending on your situation, you could be eligible for support to upgrade your insulation, heating systems, and more.

Benefits of accessing a home improvement grant include:

  • Lowering your monthly energy bills.

  • Making your home more comfortable all year round.

  • Contributing to the UK’s net-zero carbon targets.

Currently, four main government-backed schemes are available:

  • ECO4 Scheme — for free boiler upgrades and insulation.

  • Great British Insulation Scheme — focusing on cavity walls, lofts, and other insulation upgrades.

  • LA Flex Scheme — offering flexible eligibility for households just outside traditional qualifying criteria.

  • Boiler Upgrade Scheme — supporting low-carbon heating upgrades like heat pumps.

Additionally, households with disabilities may qualify for home adaptations under the Disabled Facilities Grant.

ECO4 Scheme

The ECO4 Scheme is a UK government-backed programme designed to help low-income and vulnerable households cut their energy bills and improve the energy efficiency of their homes — completely free of charge.

Funded by the UK’s major energy companies, the ECO4 Scheme provides grants for a range of home improvements, including:

  • First-time central heating systems – perfect if your home has never had central heating before.

  • Air source heat pumps – a greener, energy-saving alternative to traditional boilers.

  • Smart heating controls – to help you manage your heating more efficiently and save even more.

  • Boiler replacements – free or heavily subsidised new boilers if yours is old, broken, or inefficient.

ECO4 Eligibility – Who Can Apply for a Free Grant?

The ECO4 Scheme is designed to help low-income and vulnerable households improve their home’s energy efficiency with funding provided by the UK’s major energy suppliers.

Boiler Upgrade Scheme

If you’re ready to upgrade your home’s heating system but don’t need extra insulation the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) could help you save thousands of pounds on the cost.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a government-backed initiative aimed at helping households and businesses in England and Wales switch to cleaner, low-carbon heating systems.
It supports the UK’s goal of reducing carbon emissions from homes and buildings.

What Does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme Offer?

Boiler Upgrade Scheme offers grants to help cover the cost of installing low-carbon heating systems. You can get up to £7,500 for air source or ground source heat pumps, and £5,000 for a Gas boiler.
It’s a great way to make your home greener while saving on installation costs.

Other Home Improvement Grants

At the moment, the main government funding available for energy-efficient home improvements is through the ECO4 Scheme.

The ECO4 Scheme is designed to help low-income and vulnerable households across the UK improve their home’s energy efficiency — with free upgrades such as:

  • First-time central heating systems

  • Boiler replacements

  • Air source heat pumps

  • Smart heating controls

  • Home insulation improvements

Important:
We specialise in helping eligible households claim free funding under the ECO4 Scheme.
If you’re looking for support with general disability adaptations (such as handrails or widened doors), you would need to apply separately through your local council under a different grant.
